Neuromodulators for Wrinkles

Neuromodulator injections of botulinum toxin type A (commercially known as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) can improve frown lines, deep wrinkles in between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, across the forehead and at the corners of the eyes.

What you should know about neuromodulators for wrinkles

A minute amount of neuromodulators – wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin – is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the overlying skin.

The improvement generally lasts about three to four months before the effect gradually fades and muscle action returns. It is anticipated that the average patient will require reinjection at various intervals. With repeated treatments, thinning of the muscle may occur, which usually produces longer lasting results.

Possible Risks

As with any treatment, there are risks associated it, though they are minimized in the hands of a qualified ASDS dermatologist. These include:

  • Soreness
  • Mild bruising
  • Temporary weakness of surrounding muscles
  • Headache

Why choose neuromodulators for wrinkles?

The treatment is non-invasive and well-tolerated by most patients. Recovery time is minimal. Pricing can be substantially less than other treatments.

What to expect after the procedure

Virtually no recovery time is required after neuromodulators injections. Patients should take care not to rub treated areas, which could cause the drug to migrate to another area.

How to prepare for the procedure

Before the procedure, an ASDS dermatologist will review the patient’s medical history. This is the time for the doctor and patient to discuss expectations, potential risks and outcomes of the procedure. You should tell your doctor if you use or have recently taken:

  • Blood-thinning drugs
  • Previous neuromodulator therapy
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Allergy or cold medicine
  • Sleep medicine
